Helping Hands
The Helping Hands Ministry was developed out of requests within our church of senior adults and the disabled who needed assistance with minor home repairs. It has since grown to others outside our church family who cannot monetarily afford to pay for maintenance or home improvement themselves. Construction experience is not a requirement for becoming a part of Helping Hands ministry. “Anyone willing to do manual labor and interested in working hard is welcome to help,” says Tommie Pitts. Current members of Helping Hands include Powell Adams, Prichard Cutshaw, Norm Fralick, Wayne Givens, Tony Land, Donny Powell, under the leadership of Jerry Strickland and Tommie Pitts.
Each month varies in the amount of projects that Helping Hands have. Most of the projects only take a day to complete while others may take longer. Some jobs such as wheelchair ramps require more than one day to finish. For these jobs, members of the team will take measurements, determine the amount of lumber needed, and cut the materials at the church before taking it to the job site. Helping Hands not only minister by using their construction skills, but also by witnessing to the residents. Standing in a circle together, the team prays with the residents. Many of the residents are appreciative and grateful for people that help them at no expense. “Some people really find it hard to believe that it is free,” says Pitts.
